Teeth aren’t pulled — they’re carefully removed
Contrary to popular belief, teeth aren’t “pulled.” They’re removed by carefully and systematically applying controlled force and pressure in different directions until the tooth comes loose. We perform three types of extractions depending on the tooth and its condition.
Simple extractions are performed on teeth that are visible in the mouth, typically loosened with an elevator before being lifted out with forceps. Surgical extractions involve teeth that are compromised, broken, severely decayed, or have not fully erupted — sometimes requiring an incision or splitting the tooth into pieces for easier removal. Root tip extractions involve teeth that have broken at or below the gum line.
There are many reasons a tooth might need to be removed: severe decay, infection, gum disease, fracture, impaction, preparation for orthodontics, or teeth that simply can’t be restored with root canal treatment. Some extractions are performed here at Zent Family Dentistry, and others are referred to an oral surgeon — we’ll always recommend the path that’s right for your tooth.
